Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Novodisq different from traditional storage and compute infrastructure providers like AWS, Dell, or NetApp?

Novodisq delivers a radical rethink of storage and compute infrastructure. Our Novodisq platform offers hyperconverged systems with industry-leading data density, ultra-low power use, and built-in compute. Unlike traditional systems, which separate storage, networking, and compute into bulky silos, Novodisq integrates all three into a modular, compact, power-efficient form factor. Data stays local, performance scales linearly, and total cost of ownership is dramatically lower—often less than 15% of public cloud or enterprise alternatives.

How does the Novodisq platform achieve such high data density and low power consumption?

The Novodisq platform is built around our custom Novoblade™ modules—each one combining high-capacity flash storage, compute, and acceleration in a small, efficient form factor. A single 2U chassis holds up to 20 Novoblades and 11.5PB of raw storage using TLC NAND SSDs. The system is powered by AMD Versal G2 SoCs, providing adaptable compute and optional AI/ML acceleration. By eliminating legacy bottlenecks and removing the overhead of separate components, we reduce power usage by up to 95% and pack 10x more data into the same space.

Can I use Novodisq as a replacement for my current NAS, SAN, or public cloud storage provider?

Yes. Novodisq systems are designed to replace or complement traditional NAS, SAN, and public cloud solutions. Whether you’re running local file storage, object storage, video archives, scientific datasets, or container workloads, our Novodisq supports modern platforms like Ceph and Nextcloud, exposing NFS, iSCSI, and S3-compatible APIs. With zero data egress fees, native compute, and robust encryption, Novodisq is an ideal alternative to public cloud platforms—especially when control, performance, and cost matter.

What workloads are best suited to Novodisq architecture?
Novodisq excels at workloads that require fast local access, high-throughput storage, and integrated compute. Ideal use cases include edge AI/ML inference, 4K video surveillance and transcoding, cold and warm storage archives, scientific and geospatial data, private cloud clusters, and containerized services. The platform’s modularity also makes it perfect for distributed environments—from remote industrial sites to research labs and tiered data centres.
Is Novodisq compatible with common container platforms, and orchestration tools?

Yes. Our systems run standard Linux distributions (RHEL and Ubuntu LTS) and supports Docker, Podman and QEMU/KVM orchestration via platforms like Portainer and OpenShift. They’re fully compatible with common orchestration, storage, and monitoring stacks such as Ansible or Prometheus. We also support secure container runtimes and lightweight edge orchestrators, depending on your deployment needs.

What kind of security features are built into Novodisq systems?

Security is built from the silicon up. Every Novodisq system includes Secure Boot, TPM 2.0 support, and (optional) FIPS-140-3 certified encryption. Data is encrypted at rest using LUKS or self-encrypting SSDs, and firmware is signed and validated by default. Our FPGA-based architecture can offload cryptographic functions, post-quantum cryptography, and network encryption for high-security environments. Disk encryption can also be bound to the network or GNSS/GPS time server for enhanced physical and remote tamper protection.

How do I scale a Novodisq system—from a single appliance to a full cluster?

Novodisq is modular by design. In the data centre, you start with a single Novoblade backplane (2U, up to 20 blades) and scale horizontally by adding more blades or backplanes. The platform supports clustering via standard networking, with integrated high-speed 100-400GbE links and options for RDMA, TSN, or SDN-based orchestration. Scaling doesn’t require forklift upgrades or major rewiring—just plug in and go.

What management tools or APIs are available for provisioning, monitoring, and automation?
Novodisq platforms ship with a full suite of management options. We provide a built-in BMC with web-based GUI, CLI, and support for Ansible, SNMP, and Redfish APIs. Systems can be managed locally or remotely, integrated into your existing stack, or provisioned via Infrastructure-as-Code tools. For enterprise and edge deployments, we also support centralized monitoring, alerting, and workload scheduling through open-source or commercial observability tools.
How does your total cost of ownership compare with public cloud or traditional infrastructure?
Our TCO is typically 70–90% lower than traditional cloud or enterprise solutions over a 5 to 10 year period. That’s due to several factors: reduced rack space, lower power draw, no data egress fees, minimal cooling, long life and dramatically simplified management. Unlike the cloud, your costs are mainly fixed, hence predictable, and unlike legacy systems, Novodisq doesn’t require expensive licenses, external controllers, or constant refresh cycles. You get high performance, long-term reliability, and better economics from day one.
